| Su tercer álbum, London Calling, un disco doble vendido al precio de uno por la insistencia de la banda, fue emitido también en 1979 y marcó el punto de mayor éxito crítico y de inflexión comercial en los Estados Unidos del grupo. Inicialmente, fue visto con recelo por los fanáticos británicos de Clash ya que los discos dobles estaban asociados con el rock progresivo y no con el punk. En London Calling la banda experimentó con una amplia gama de estilos musicales como el rockabilly americano, el reggae jamaiquino y los estilos dub y ska populares en Gran Bretaña.[18] El álbum es considerado por la crítica como uno de los mejores de la historia del rock[19] y fue posicionado octavo por la revista Rolling Stone en su lista de los 500 mejores álbumes de todos los tiempos, primero en su lista de los mejores álbumes de los años 1980 y cuarto por la Revista Q en su lista de los 100 mejores álbumes británicos de la historia.[20] El estilo de las letras de la portada de London Calling[21] es un homenaje al primer disco de Elvis Presley mientras que la foto usada muestra a Paul Simonon golpeando contra el piso su defectuoso bajo en un show de Nueva York de ese mismo año. Según Simonon, que en un principio no quería que se usara la foto para la tapa del álbum, fue la única vez que rompió un instrumento en el escenario. Irónicamente, el tema más exitoso del disco, \"Train in Vain (Stand by Me)\" que llegó al #23 en las listas estadounidenses,[1] no había sido incluido en un principio en London Calling ya que la banda tenía pensado emitirlo como flexi disc en la revista NME. | Give \'Em Enough Rope, for all of its many attributes, was essentially a holding pattern for the Clash, but the double-album London Calling is a remarkable leap forward, incorporating the punk aesthetic into rock & roll mythology and roots music. Before, the Clash had experimented with reggae, but that was no preparation for the dizzying array of styles on London Calling. There\'s punk and reggae, but there\'s also rockabilly, ska, New Orleans R&B, pop, lounge jazz, and hard rock; and while the record isn\'t tied together by a specific theme, its eclecticism and anthemic punk function as a rallying call. While many of the songs -- particularly \"London Calling,\" \"Spanish Bombs,\" and \"The Guns of Brixton\" -- are explicitly political, by acknowledging no boundaries the music itself is political and revolutionary. But it is also invigorating, rocking harder and with more purpose than most albums, let alone double albums. Over the course of the record, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones (and Paul Simonon, who wrote \"The Guns of Brixton\") explore their familiar themes of working-class rebellion and antiestablishment rants, but they also tie them in to old rock & roll traditions and myths, whether it\'s rockabilly greasers or \"Stagger Lee,\" as well as mavericks like doomed actor Montgomery Clift. The result is a stunning statement of purpose and one of the greatest rock & roll albums ever recorded. [In 2000 Columbia/Legacy reissued and remastered London Calling.]

| London Calling fue el tercer álbum de la banda punk británica The Clash y el que marcó su punto de inflexión comercial y musical, así como el que incorporó finalmente la estética punk a la mitología de la música. The Vanilla Tapes es una recopilación de demos emitida en la edición del 25° aniversario de London Calling. | Epic/Legacy reissued the Clash's classic third album, London Calling, in 2000, remastering the album and restoring the original artwork, much of which didn't make the original CD issue. No bonus material was added to this or any of the other Clash reissues of 2000, largely because nearly all of the B-sides and useable rare material had already appeared on compilations ranging from Super Black Market Clash to the box set Clash on Broadway. Over the next few years, expanded double-disc reissues of classic albums came into vogue among reissue labels, and eventually the Clash became a candidate for such a reissue, but it seemed like their vaults were empty. Then, a couple of extraordinary discoveries occurred. As he was moving to a new home in the spring of 2004, Mick Jones happened upon a box of tapes that included the long-rumored, long-thought-lost Vanilla Tapes -- rough rehearsal sessions for "London Calling" named after the London studio where they were recorded. Around the same time, legendary Clash associate Kosmo Vinyl sent bassist Paul Simonon old video tapes that contained grimy black-and-white footage of the Clash cutting "London Calling" at Wessex Studios with producer Guy Stevens. These two historic discoveries were more than enough material to justify a new special-edition reissue, so Epic/Legacy prepared a triple-disc set -- containing a CD with the original LP, a CD with The Vanilla Tapes, and a DVD containing a documentary, promo videos, and that newly discovered raw footage -- as part of their acclaimed Legacy Edition series, just in time for the 25th anniversary of the album's release. |
